He was a brigadier-general of militia before the war of the Rebellion, and during the war was a lieutenant-colonel of the One Hundred and Seventh Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was a very popular man, and kind to the needy. He died from disease contracted in the service.
