He was born at Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, where he attended the public schools, afterwards matriculating at Geneva College, where he graduated in the class of 1899, with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, then at Princeton University in the class of 1900, with another baccalaureate degree. Mr. May studied law in the office of Hice & Hice, and he was admitted to the bar January 26, 1904, at once commencing his practice at Beaver. He was later admitted to partnership in the firm of Hice, Morrison, Reader & May; and he was later a member of the firm of Hice, Morrison, May & Bradshaw, with offices in the Beaver Trust Company Building. He was a member of the Beaver County Bar Association, of which he was a secretary; the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
Of Mr. May's many business associations, these are among the most prominent: he was a director of the Beaver County Trust Company; Federal Title and Trust Company, of Beaver Falls; vice-president of John T. Reeves and Company, private bankers; vice-president of the Beaver Falls Art Tile Company vice-president of the Robert Rossman Company; director of the Beaver Enameling Company; president of the Columbia Building and Loan Association; trustee of Geneva College; member of the board of directors of the Beaver County Children's Home; vice-president of the Reeves Land Company of Beaver Falls; member of the board of managers of the Grove Cemetery; and a director of the Beaver County League of Building and Loan associations.
Mr. May was a Republican in his political convictions, but he did not hold political office. During the World War he was engaged in secretarial work for the Young Men's Christian Association. He was a member of the Rotary Club; the Beaver Falls Chamber of Commerce; Beaver Valley Country Club; and the Beaver County Historical Society. He was a member of the board of deacons of the First Presbyterian Church of Beaver Falls, and was a trustee of the Beaver Presbytery. He wrote a history of the church, which was published, and he also read a paper on Chinamen in Beaver Falls, under the name of "Beaver County's Chinatown," which dealt with the experiment in the eighteen-seventies of employing Chinese labor in the old cutlery factory.
