General Notes: Husband - William H. Matthews


He received his education in Waterford schools and Fairfield academy. At twenty years of age he began teaching, which profession he followed for nine years. Seven years of this time was spent in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. During his period of teaching he studied surveying with J. A. Paige, a noted civil engineer, and after 1880 devoted his time to surveying and the management of his farm. As a surveyor he was very successful. As a farmer and stock-raiser he was among the foremost of his section. He was a republican in political opinion, and a member of the Fairfield United Presbyterian church.
