He was educated at the Conneautville, PA, high school, and began teaching in the common schools in 1879, continuing until 1893. During that time he was principal of the Conneautville high school and the Jamestown (Pennsylvania) Seminary. He was elected prothonotary on the Populist ticket in November, 1896. In 1894 the degree of Ph. D. was conferred upon him by Grove City College.
