He received his education in Lancaster County. He always remained at home, assisting his father, and eventually took over the home place in Boggs township. He was particularly interested in the welfare of the schools in his district, and held many of the township offices, including serving as justice of the peace. He was quite prominent as a worker in the Democratic party, and in religious matters was identified with the Pres­byterian Church, to which his parents also belonged.
