He came to America from Ireland about 1770, and soon afterward purchased 400 acres of land in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where he engaged extensively in farming and stock raising. Early in life he was engaged as a "trader," an occupation extensively carried on in the early history of Pennsylvania.

He and his wife had four sons and three daughters; John being the second son.
