General Notes: Husband - Ralph Wilson McGranahan

He graduated from Monmouth College in 1887 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and trained for the ministry at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, completing his course in 1893. Monmouth College conferred on him the degree of Master of Arts, and Westminster that of Doctor of Divinity. Dr. McGranahan began his professional life as principal of the West Sunbury Academy in Pennsylvania, where he remained from 1887 to 1889. He was then professor of Latin at Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, from 1889 to 1893. During the next six years he served the Tenth United Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh as pastor. Thereafter, from 1899 to 1918, Dr. McGranahan was occupied as president of Knoxville College, Knoxville, Tennessee. To that work he carried a fine zeal, executive ability of a high order, a liberally educated intelligence, and practical experience as a teacher and as an executive. His goal was the modernization and liberalization of the curriculum, the coordination of the work with the demands of life outside, the building up of an able faculty, and the establishment of the finances on a sound basis. During the nineteen years of his incumbency, Dr. McGranahan made long strides toward the realization of this high ambition. Beginning in 1918 he was secretary of the negro work of the United Presbyterian Church, with headquarters in Pittsburgh.
