General Notes: Husband - Alvah S. Van Gorder

He grew up to manhood assisting his father on the farm and in the mills. He inherited a part of the old family place and bought an adjoining piece of property, so that he came to own a tract of 122 acres, all improved land in most excellent condition. He kept the old stone house in repair, and made good use of it, although in 1870 he built himself an attractive dwelling-house. He also erected some new barns. Mr. Van Gorder followed general farming, and maintained a small but choice dairy. The mills in which he held a third interest also took up much of his time with handsome profits as the result.
