General Notes: Husband - James Newcome

He taught school and singing school in several different counties of Pennsylvania, when yet in his minority. He migrated to Iowa in 1856 where he worked for several years, and purchased a farm in Cedar County. At the outbreak of the Rebellion he enlisted in an Iowa regiment and served four years. At the close of the war he held the commission of Second Lieutenant. He was in many battles, the principal ones were Shiloh and Vicksburg. He was in Sherman's march to the sea. After the war he returned to Iowa, and shortly afterwards went to his native state.
He married and returned to Iowa with his wife soon after and settled on his farm, where he resided till the spring of 1881. They sold and emigrated to Butler County, Kansas.
He held the offices of Justice-of-the Peace, and school director, was an elder in the Presbyterian church, and was secretary of a cemetery association and director of a Grange store at Tipton, Iowa.
