He was the fourth in a family of five children.
He acquired his education in the common schools and in the Normal School at Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and at the age of eighteen years he commenced the study of medicine in the office of Dr. Alexander Stewart & Son. In 1877 he entered Bellevue Medical College, New York, where he graduated with the degree of M. D. in 1879, and the same year commenced practice in Shippensburg. The Doctor was a member of Cumberland County Medical Society. In politics he was a Republican.
