He was born on the Marchand farm, north of Irwin, Pennsylvania (patented as White Plains, 1811). He attended public school at Wray’s, Byerly’s, Stewartsville and Jacksonville, successively. He taught school at Jacksonville one session, attended the Rev. Oliver Katz’s school at Turtle Creek, and later Jefferson College, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He read medicine with Dr. Shriner, of New Texas, Pennsylvania, and graduated at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, 1862. He began practicing medicine that same year at the Keister Hotel, in Irwin, later erecting an office at Second and Main streets, in which he established himself. He was, in politics, an active Republican, and an adherent of and liberal supporter of the Presbyterian church.
