There is some evidence that this family came from Wurtemberg, Germany, in an indenture executed in 1720 (still in the possession of a member of the family in 1905). In this deed is the name of John Greenawalt, who was probably the father of Johann Heinrich.

He and his wife settled near Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania, but moved to Chambersburg during the Revolution.
