General Notes: Husband - Dr. John Wilson Morrow, M.D.

On account of ill health, he was unable to take an A. B. degree, so after a thorough preparation he became a teacher, which profession he followed for thirteen years, the last year of that period in the Vicksburg (MS) Freedman's College, as principal of that school. After preparatory studies under J. M. Pettigrew, M. D., of Rural Valley, he attended Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, where he graduated March 13, 1873. Dr. Morrow commenced the practice of medicine at Atwood, Pennsylvania, and continued there till 1881, when he removed to Tionesta. While a resident of Atwood he took an active part in everything that was for the betterment of the community. He was the means of a high school for academical instruction being organized in the village, and was president of the board. Upon the Doctor's removal to Tionesta, he became identified with all the various activities of that place, educational, religious and social, in all of which he maintained a keen interest till his death. At various times he was given positions of honor and trust in the county, especially in connection with his work as a physician. He assisted in organizing Capt. George Stowe Post, No. 137, G. A. R., and was its adjutant for more than twenty years, having served as corporal of Company M, 5th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, during the last year of the Civil war; was a member of the board of medical examiners for Forest County, and was especially helpful to the veterans of the Civil war in obtaining pensions. For many years he was a member of the Venango County Medical Society; was a member of the Medical Society of Pennsylvania, and a member of the Medical Society of America; was also an elder in the United Presbyterian Church. [HVC 1919, 711]

He was of Scotch-Irish descent. He was reared in his native county, and educated at McElroy's school, Rural Village, and in Dayton Union Academy. In 1870 he began the study of medicine with Dr. J. M. Pettigrew, of Rural Village, and in the fall of 1871 entered Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, being graduated March 13, 1873. Prior to his study of medicine he taught school thirteen years. In the Civil war he served one year in Company M, Fifth Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, and was honorably discharged at the close of the struggle. In 1869 he took charge of the United Presbyterian Freedman's Mission School, at Vicksburg, Mississippi. In 1872 he began the practice of his profession in Atwood, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and there he remained until 1881, and was postmaster eight years. He then removed to Tionesta, Forest County, where he thereafter resided, building up a large and lucrative practice. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, the Venango County Medical Society, and of the G. A. R. Politically he was a Republican, and served multiple terms as coroner of Forest County. The Doctor was secretary of the board of pension examiners, which was appointed in Tionesta August 23, 1889.
