By profession a teacher, he received his early education in the schools of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and later attended several other educational institutions. He resided for some time in Jefferson township, and later moved to a farm purchased by him in Forward township.

Susan P. Lowrie was a member of his household, having made her home with him beginning in 1865. She taught school for fifteen years or more.
