General Notes: Husband - Lt.-Col. James Piper

He was born in the North of Ireland, and came to America with his father's family, about 1750, settling in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the First Rifles, Continental Regiment, Pennsylvania Line, and was commissioned lieutenant-colonel, March 13, 1776. He was engaged with his command at the battle of Long Island, August 27, 1776. He was wounded and fell into the hands of the British. The date of his death is not known, as he was one of the victims of the inhuman treatment accorded the prisoners on the British prison ships in New York harbor.
