He was born on a farm in the autumn of 1811. He remained on the farm until 1839, when he opened a store in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. In 1840 he was appointed postmaster by Martin Van Buren, and continued to attend to the duties of that office until he removed to Pittsburgh, five years later. In the autumn of 1846 he went to Jacksonville, Westmoreland County, and was postmaster four years there. He returned to Wilkinsburg in 1853, was again appointed postmaster in 1864, and held the office twenty years. He and family were associated with the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Stoner was a republican, and was treasurer of Sterrett township beginning in 1881.

He was born on the Stoner homestead in Penn township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. His early life was spent on the home farm, and he had the advantages of as good schooling as the public schools of that day and section afforded. He assisted his father in the cultivation and management of the home farm until 1839, at which time he removed to Wilkinsburg and associated himself in the general mercantile business with Hugh Boyd. This business was carried on very successfully until 1846, when the partnership was dissolved and Mr. Stoner went to Jacksonville, Westmoreland County, where he was in mercantile business and postmaster for a period of four years. He then returned to Wilkinsburg and resumed his old line of business in 1853, in which he was engaged very profitably until his death. Upon his return to Wilkinsburg he had erected a store building, and in the following year the house at No. 732 Penn avenue. He was appointed postmaster of Wilkinsburg by President Van Buren in 1840 and served five years. He was reappointed postmaster of Wilkinsburg in 1864 by President Lincoln and held this office for twenty years. He was also at one time treasurer of Sterrett township, and was one of the most prominent men in that section of the state, having always given his active support to the principles of the Republican party. He was an attendant of the Presbyterian church.
