His mother died when he was six days old, and he was early adopted by his uncle, Seth A. Backus, who was childless, who brought Frank W. to Smethport, Pennsylvania, when a child of six years. He was educated in the public schools, and spent his life engaged in farming in the vicinity of Smethport. He was a Republican in politics, a member of the Presbyterian church, his wife of the Episcopal.
