In the schools of South Middleton township, and of West Pennsboro, he gained a good education, attending until he was nineteen years of age. His home industrial training was along agricultural lines. For five years he farmed land belonging to his father in the western part of the township. but at his father's death he inherited the West Pennsboro homestead.
