His father was a native of Germany, whence he emigrated to America in 1764, settling in East Donegal township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he was one of the earliest pioneers. He engaged in farming.

He followed farming in East Donegal Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, until he retired, shortly before his death.
