General Notes: Husband - Abraham Lincoln

Rockbridge Co, VA

According to one source, he [Abraham] was the grandfather of President Lincoln, but other sources disagree.

He [Thomas] was the grandfather of President Lincoln, and shortly before his death, Lincoln (who was killed by the Indians) visited William Winters at his home, now Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and John Winters, his brother-in-law, returned to Kentucky with him, whither Mr. Lincoln had removed, after his marriage, from Virginia, John being deputed to look after some lands taken up by Col. Boone and his father. They traveled on foot from the farm by a route leading by where Bellefonte now is, the "Indian path leading from Bald Eagle to Frankstown." John Winters visited his sister, Mrs. Potter, in 1843, and wandering to the hill upon which the academy was situated, a messenger was sent for him, his friends thinking he had lost himself, but he was only looking for the path he and Lincoln had trod sixty years before, and pointed out with his finger the course from Spring Creek along Buffalo Run to where it crosses the "long limestone valley" as being their route. [HCC 1883, 222]

Whichever name is correct, it is doubtful that he was the grandfather of President Lincoln. The grandfather was a relative named Thomas Lincoln.

General Notes: Wife - Hannah Winters

She was the mother of eleven children.

William Winters' first wife, Ann Boone, was a sister of Colonel Daniel Boone, of Ken-tucky fame. Their oldest daughter, Hannah, married Abraham Lincoln, the grandfather of President Lincoln. [GPHAV, 251] But the same source [GPHAV, 724] seems to suggest it was someone else. Interestingly - and perhaps more reliably, Wikipedia gives different information entirely. It seems likely that in the extended Lincoln family there were probably several men named Abraham.
