General Notes: Husband - William Ellsworth Stewart

He received his middle name for the lamented Colonel Ellsworth shot at Alexandria, Virginia, early in the Civil war.
He grew up on the farm and received his education in the schools of the home neighborhood, living at home until he became interested in the oil business with his brother James. Thereafter, his attention was given principally to that industry, his operations being in the Cherrytree territory for some twelve years. He sank a number of wells on his own account, and held interests in many others, but the dry holes that he struck were expensive enough to offset the gains from the productive wells, and like his brother, he was most successful as a drilling contractor rather than a producer. Having decided to withdraw from oil production he purchased the interests of the other heirs in the old home place, and was encouraged in this intention by his uncle James A. Stewart, who lived there with him during the last ten years of his life, his own farm being a mile distant. Mr. Stewart then profitably engaged in agricultural work. He kept the property up in thrifty fashion, building a substantial residence in 1911. His interest in local affairs led him to accept some of the township offices, in which he gave highly satisfactory service, as assessor for six or seven years and road supervisor.
