General Notes: Husband - Thomas Liggett

He was one of a family of two boys and four girls. The family immigrated from Ireland to America in 1791, and settled in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where the father died one year later. Thomas was then apprenticed to learn the carpenter's trade, which he mastered, and in 1802 moved to Pittsburgh, where he began building operations. He continued actively in the contracting business for many years. In the meantime, having faith in the future of Pittsburgh, he invested his savings in realty, notably the block on Smithfield street from Fifth avenue to Diamond alley, partly occupied by the Kaufmann building. This he bought in 1827, from Alexander Miller and John Thaw for $3,800, being about $15 per foot front, and afterward used as a lumber-yard. In 1836 he bought of Joseph McFarland twenty acres in Wilkins township (later the Twentieth ward of Pittsburgh). He called the place "Springwood," built a country residence and moved there in 1839. The old homestead was later occupied by John Liggett, and was his home for fifty years. Thomas Liggett served as prothonotary of Allegheny County.

He came to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from Ireland in 1801 and died at "Springwood", the family home in East End, Pittsburgh, in 1865. [CRFP, 1459]
