General Notes: Husband - William M. Ayres, Jr.


He commenced merchandising with his uncle, Hon. John C. Bucher, and removing to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, entered the wholesale trade. He was appointed by Gov. Wm. F. Johnston an Aid de Camp, with the rank of Lieut. Colonel. Whilst in Major General Wm. F. Smith's Division of the Army of the Potomac, in the Rebellion, Col. Ayres was captured on Bull Run battlefield, and confined in Libby prison, Richmond, Virginia. He was released April, 1862, under a Parole d'honneur.
