General Notes: Husband - Dr. W. A. Means


He was raised on a farm near Whitesville, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. He attended the public schools. At the age of seventeen he began teaching, and taught winters and summers for three years. He attended the Whitesville Academy, under the tutorship of Rev. Samuel Bowman. In the year 1859 he commenced the study of medicine with Dr. William Altman, of Punxsutawney. He attended the Cincinnati College of Medicine and Surgery, graduating February 3, 1875. After this he practiced in Jefferson County and later was in active practice at Du Bois, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.
