He was born in Virginia, and in early manhood came to Pennsylvania, locating in Somerset County, whence he subsequently removed to Jefferson County. In early life he learned the shoemaker's trade, which he followed for some years and then turned his attention to farming and lumbering, being connected with those business interests up to the time of his death.
