He was a graduate of Washington and Lee University, Virginia. In the autumn of 1917 he enlisted in Pittsburgh for service in the Great War. He was sent to Fort McPherson, at Atlanta, Georgia. When he arrived there he was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Ordnance Department and from there was sent to Peoria, Illinois, thence to Kenosha, Wisconsin, and thence to Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, and thence to Raritan Arsenal, New Jersey, from which place he was honorably discharged, the Armistice having been declared.
