In early life he learned the trade of cooper. He moved with his family to a farm in Manor township, Armstong County, Pennsylvania, purchased after the death of his father, and for a few years ran a huckster's wagon, during that time meeting his future wife, and he thereafter was engaged in farming, owning the farm on which he resided in Bethel township.

He has taken considerable interest in local public affairs, was overseer of the poor, and for several years served as tax collector. He was formerly a Republican, but was later a Democrat in political sentiment. In religious connection the family were members of the Lutheran Church, belonging to the Bethel congregation.
