General Notes: Husband - Dr. William Harvey Axtell

He came with his parents to Mercer County, PA, where he enjoyed such educational facilities as the times furnished. He finally studied medicine, and began to practice in 1840. His success was such as the most ardent could desire. He was still living and practicing at Sheakleyville in 1888, the oldest physician in Mercer County. Like his father, he began and continued under the old system of practice; and like him, he held to the Presbyterian form and system of theology.

His early education was received at the common schools, and he completed his education at the Meadville Academy and Allegheny College. His medical education was obtained in his father’s office. He commenced the practice of medicine in Sheakleyville in 1839, and has been in active practice until well into the 1880s, in connection with his son, John L., under the firm name of W. H. & J. L. Axtell.
He filled the office of county coroner; held the office of school director for more than twenty years, and was a member of the borough council. He was a member of the Prohibition party, with Republican antecedents.
