He was educated in the common schools of Venango County, Pennsylvania. In 1872, at the age of nineteen, he began in the oil business and followed it until 1882.
He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal church. He was a member of the I. O. O. F., and was one of the representative business men and ardent Republicans of Venango County.
