General Notes: Husband - Rev. Robert Proudfit

While his brother David was a student at Dobbins's Classical School he used to bring his books home for study during vacation. Robert, then a lad in his early teens, began studying these books for his own pleasure. When the older brother saw the interest taken he offered to help him, and so Robert began his higher education.
Robert was sent to Dobbins's School, and later to Dickinson College, from which he was graduated in 1798. He studied theology in the house of his Uncle James in Salem, New York, where his cousin, Alexander, as well as his uncle, gave him instruction. He was licensed in 1802, April 20, and two years later, April 18, 1804, was ordained and installed in Broadalbin (later Perth), New York. He preached there until 1818, when he was called to Union College, Schnectady, New York, as Professor of Greek and Latin. He remained in this position, active or emeritus, until his death.
His daughter, Sarah, wrote of him: "From the time he came to this college he preached almost every Sunday in some of the churches of the surrounding country. He often went to his old charge, 21 miles away. He was very strongly attached to them."
