He also did additional study at the British Museum and at Cambridge University. He was awarded a Faculty summer grant in 1968 and a Danforth Grant in the summer of 1969.
He had two careers. He was an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church and had pastorates in Pennsylvania, New York, Nevada and California. He then became a college professor, teaching in the English Department of University of the Pacific for twenty-seven years. His special fields of competence and interest were: Milton and the Seventeenth-Century Literature of England; Survey of English Litera­ture; Poetry - British and American; The novels of Herman Melville; English grammar and usage; English composition. He held the following offices in professional organizations: President, College English Association of the Bay Area, 1960; Vice-president, College English Association of the Bay Area, 1959; Secre­tary-Treasurer, College English Association of the Bay Area, 1958; President, Pacific Faculty Club, 1958; Secretary, Pacific Graduate Council; Secretary, Pacific Faculty Council, 1961, Chairman, UOP General Faculty, 1966.
He was active in the Masonic organization since joining DEMOLAY in Franklin, Pennsylvania. He was made a member of the Legion of Honor of Venango Chapter October 14, 1979. This has included: Masonic Lodge; Scottish Rite, 32° And 33°; Royal Order of Scotland; Grand Lodge of California and Hawaii; Order of Eastern Star; Order Of Eastern Star: K.C.C.H. Investiture Team, Grand Chaplain in San Francisco; Chairman of Stockton Scottish Rite Aphasia Program and Chairman, Loys T. Newton Scholarship Grant Committee.
