General Notes: Husband - John Park

He studied surveying with his father and step-father, and received a commission as deputy surveyor for the western district of Pennsylvania, from Gov. Snyder. He located near the present site of Marion, Indiana County.

He was born in Ireland. He was a surveyor under James Johnston, and in 1795 came to Indiana County, Pennsylvania, to survey. That section of the country appealing to his fancy, he built a cabin for himself, the first on the present site of Marion Center, and became the owner of four hundred and eighty acres of land. His cabin was built with the assistance of five whites, who lived several miles to the south, and some friendly Seneca Indians. Later he founded the town, and named the place Marion in honor of General Marion.
