After attending the public schools, he was set to learn the carpenter's trade, and worked as a journeyman some ten years. In 1904 he commenced the business of contracting and building with his father. The business was later incorporated as R. Lamont & Sons Company. They carried on a lumber and manufacturing business at No. 3109 Penn avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
