General Notes: Husband - John S. Sommerville

He came to America in 1846, and in Centre County, Pennsylvania, embarked in the coal business, opening the Snow Shoe mines, which he extensively operated, under contract with the Bellefonte & Snow Shoe R. R. Co. He also conducted a store at Snow Shoe for a number of years; but during his later life he devoted his entire energies to the coal industry, associating with him his son, James L., under the firm name of John S. Sommerville & Son. His wife died in Scotland, his son, James L., being the only one to come with him to America. He was a stanch Whig in early life, and afterward a Republican; he was a leading member of the Presbyterian Church and served as elder for some time.
