General Notes: Husband - John Rugh

He was born on the family homestead, and attended school in an old log cabin which served as a schoolhouse at that early period. He became the owner of the land on which this historic building once stood. On reaching manhood he remained at home, assisting his father in the labors of the farm. When not employed with the crops they operated the coal bank which formed part of the estate. On the death of his father he succeeded to the ownership of the farm, the property having been bequeathed to him by will, and he resided without interruption in the old home. He was always a public-spirited citizen, and although never an office-seeker he was nominated by his neighbors for various positions of trust. He was a Republican in politics, was for many years an officer in the Lutheran church, and was one of those most largely instrumental in the erection of a new church edifice.

He was a republican in politics and when it was necessary always took an active part in the interests of his party. He was for a short time identified with the Greenback party, and was its candidate for sheriff of Westmoreland county in 1880. He was a member of the First Lutheran church of Greensburg. At various times he held all of the local offices of that church, to which he was a liberal contributor and to which he gave largely of his means toward the erection of the church structure. He also gave a considerable sum to the Children's Aid Society and contributed quite an amount to the Greensburg Seminary. In addition to all those generous contributions he gave three acres in the right of way to the S. W. P. R. R. in 1871, and afterwards donated ten acres of very valuable land for the site of the Gillinder glass works. [BHCWC, 690]
