He was a graduate of the Pennsylvania State College. He was a civil engineer of some experience, and was, with his brother, extensively engaged in the coal business. His office was at No. 616 Frick Building, Pittsburgh.

He received his education at the schools of Altoona and graduated from Pennsylvania State College in 1896 as a civil and mining engineer. He was also president of the Pittsburgh-Westmoreland Coal Company.
