General Notes: Husband - Collin Marion Mateer Sample

To the public schools of Clarion County, Pennsylvania, he was indebted for his preliminary educational training, which was later supplemented by extensive reading and association with men of affairs. He early began to assist his father in the work of the home farm, and remained with his parents until his marriage. After that event he was engaged in mining for a period of eight years, at the expiration of which time he purchased his Grandfather McNutt's farm in Porter township, which was an estate of one hundred acres of finely improved land. For the ensuing fourteen years he resided on this place and on March 4, 1910, purchased the old Sample homestead, which he improved with new buildings and on which he then maintained the family home. His time was devoted to general farming and in that line he met with great success. His political allegiance was given to the Republican party. Beginning in 1911 he filled the office of township supervisor, being president of the board of supervisors. In a fraternal way he was affiliated with Lodge No. 170, Knights of the Maccabees, at New Bethlehem. His religious faith was in accord with the teachings of the Presbyterian church, of which he and his family were devout members.
