At the outbreak of the Civil War this family was divided in its political views, some of its members adhering with all the vehemence of a very resolute stock of men to the Union and its republican ideals, while others pledged themselves to the doctrine of states' rights. Daniel Krotzer and one of his sons enlisted in the Confederate army, whilst two other sons of Daniel entered the Union army.
