He was reared in Erie County, Pennsylvania, receiving a common-school education, and followed farming until 1869, when he went to Venango County and engaged in drilling wells. He remained there four years, and then went to Clarion County, where he stayed three years. In 1878 he came to McKean County, and then was engaged in oil producing. He was a supporter of the Republican party, and was a member of the K. O. T. M.
