He enlisted in Company F, One Hundred and Twenty-First Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served through the Civil War. He was a miller by trade, and followed that business until 1887, when he was appointed United States gauger and store-keeper, and later was running a mill in Clarion county, PA.

Venango Daily Herald, Thursday, Dec 8, 1910
The tragic death of Alfred Koch, late of 203 E. Fourth St., Oil City, was made known Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock when the water was pumped from the excavation for the south abutment of the new Petroleum Street bridge and the body was found. Mr. Koch had disappeared last Saturday evening, and when last seen was walking in the direction of the bridge. The pit had not been pumped out for two weeks. Shortly after the pumps were set to work about one o'clock, a hand was seen extending above the surface and Foreman Cribbs made the shocking discovery as above stated. It is supposed that Mr. Koch had undertaken to cross the old bridge and in the darkness had made a misstep and fallen into the pit. Coroner McElroy viewed the body and decided that no inquest was necessary.
The deceased was 68 years of age. He was born in Berks County and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Koch. He moved to East Sandy about 25 years ago and for years was the owner of a flour mill at that place. 18 years ago, he moved to Oil City. He served in the war (Civil) as a member of Co. F., 121st P.V. Cavalry. and was a member of Hayes Post G.A.R.
The deceased is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Schmelzly Koch, his mother, Mrs. Harriet Koch of East Sandy who is 94 years old and the following children: Mrs. Vernon J. Myers of Franklin; Mrs. Fred T. McCollum of Oil City; Harriet and Clara at home and William of Oil City, also three brothers, William of Lamartine, Aaron of East Sandy and Jerry of West Virginia.
