He was a native of Ireland and of Scotch-Irish lineage. He was a cooper by trade, and in the early part of the 19th century removed to Penn's Valley, Centre County, Pennsylvania, settling near Millheim. He died when more than seventy years of age. During the last ten years of his life he was not able to walk, being crippled by rheumatism.
