He obtained his educational training in the common schools of Kansas, and at the age of eighteen left school and engaged in agricultural pursuits until his twenty-third year. He then became associated with the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, working as fireman for eleven years. He received a promotion to engineer, January 3, 1889.
