General Notes: Husband - David A. Renfrew

Becoming impressed with the desirability of a more extended education than was afforded at the schools in his section, he commenced the regular course in Marshall College, but ill health compelled him to abandon his intentions to graduate after attending for two years. Thinking to benefit his health, he came to Butler County, PA, in 1840, and engaged in school teaching, intending shortly to return home, but becoming acquainted with his wife-to-be, he was led to change his plans for the future, and purchased a farm in Allegheny County, which was disposed of in 1848, and in 1851 he purchased and removed to a farm in Penn Township, Butler County. To this was subsequently added another farm on which he resided, and on which, in 1854, he erected a saw-mill, which was run for many years. In 1868, he erected a grist mill, which did service until it burned in June, 1882. That same year, 1882, oil was discovered in paying quantities on his farm and Renfrew City, one of the typical oil towns, was built on his farm, and it was one of the stations of the Pittsburgh & Western Railroad. He and his wife were consistent members of the Covananters Church. [HBC 1883, 273]

He was reared in his native county, and went into business with his father. In 1840 he came to Butler County, PA, and settled on Connoquenessing creek, in what later became Penn township. In 1844 he built a saw mill, and in 1868 a grist mill, which was the beginning of the present village of Renfrew, named in honor of its founder. He was prominently identified with oil producing, and had several wells on his property. His original tract of 600 acres was over time reduced to 200, which, however, was sufficient to support him in comfort the remainder of his life.
