He was an eminent Presbyterian divine of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

He was a native of Ireland, where he was educated in the Magee College, in Belfast, and at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Upon his coming to America Dr. Kirkpatrick became one of the foremost clergymen of the Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania and also an educator of note, conducting private schools in which four governors of Pennsylvania were prepared for college.
