He attended the district schools of Robinson Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, until fifteen years of age, when he went to work on the farm and thereafter was engaged in farming and dairying on the old home place.
He was a Republican in politics, and served one term as assessor of the township. The family attended church at Candor.
