He passed his boyhood on the farm and attended the public schools. Afterwards he entered college, withdrawing before graduation in order to accept the principalship of the public schools at Latrobe, being then but twenty-one years of age. He devoted his attention to teaching for a number of years and became a prominent figure in connection with the public school system of his native county. He early determined to adopt the profession of the law and prosecuted his technical reading as opportunity presented. During the progress of his studies he was under able preceptors. He was admitted to the bar of Westmoreland County, January 17, 1880. He forthwith opened an office in Greensburg and was a member of the well known law firm of Williams, Sloan and Wegley.
