General Notes: Husband - David W. Shupe

After attending the excellent public schools of Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, he attended the Lebanon Valley College and later graduated from Iron City College with the class of 1880. He then entered the employ of the Baltimore & Ohio Railway Company as assistant agent at Mount Pleasant, where he spent three years, and then engaged in general merchandise at Pleasant Unity, where he remained five years. Having sold his store there he bought a grocery and queen-sware stock in Greensburg, on Pennsylvania avenue. This he operated one year and sold. He next became a traveling salesman for J. C. Lemon & Co., of Baltimore, Maryland, beginning in 1892. February 3, 1893, he became associated with S. D. Ache & Co., of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as commercial agent for their confectionary house. With them, and their successors, L. A. Butler, Mr. Shupe remained until 1906, when he became county commissioner. He was a consistent, straightforward Democrat, and was very popular both within and without his chosen party. In 1901 he was made the nominee for sheriff of Westmoreland county, and defeated by only one hundred and fifty-seven votes, where the county was strongly Republican. At his home, South West Greensburg, he served as school director and councilman. In the autumn of 1905 he was, upon three weeks notice before election, made the Democratic nominee for county commissioner, and although his campaign lasted but two weeks against a well organized opposition and with less than one hundred dollars campaign fund he was elected by seven hundred and seven majority, proving his popularity among the common people. Mr. Shupe was identified with the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Greensburg, of which he was trustee and Sabbath school librarian-a three year term of the latter and for five years in the former office. The civil and social orders to which he belonged are: The Masonic Westmoreland Lodge, No. 518, A. F. and A. M.; Knights of Pythias, No. 177, of Latrobe; Moss Rose Lodge, No. 350, of Mount Pleasant Odd Fellows Order; Commercial Travelers' Protective Association of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; the Commercial Travelers' Christian Association known as "Gideons" Pittsburgh Camp No. 1; Woodmen of the World, No. 18, at Greensburg. He also protected his family by carrying life assurance policies with the New York Mutual and Masonic of Hartford, Connecticut. When a young man he was a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard at Mount Pleasant.
