He was of English descent. He was a farmer and also ran a distillery, and when the temperance wave struck the country in the eighteen-fifties, he converted his distillery into a grist mill, and operated this for many years. He was an elder and leader in the Presbyterian Church, and died at the age of eighty-five years, his wife dying at the age of eighty-four years.
