He was educated at the Chambersburg Academy, and afterward studied a year at Lafayette College and two years at Princeton. After leaving college he went West, but returned to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and entered the service of the Cumberland Valley Railroad, and came to occupy the position of Supervisor of the Cumberland Valley Railroad.
