He was reared on a farm in Independence township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and attended the common schools and Beaver Academy. He studied medicine, graduated from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1856, and was engaged in the practice of his profession in Beaver County for ten years. Afterward he carried on the drug business in New Brighton for one year, and Oct. 5, 1877, he became editor of the Star, Beaver.
